Tinhorn Creek Goes Carbon Neutral With Offsetters

Purchasing high quality offsets, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has renewed its commitment to sustainability by becoming the first Canadian winery to take responsibility for their carbon footprint.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has been a leader in sustainability since its inception in 1994 and has developed a thorough emissions reduction program focusing on their transportation, electricity, and water use. Winemaker Sandra Oldfield and General Manager Shaun Everest calculated the total greenhouse gas emissions produced by the winery, targeted areas to cut emissions, and finally, offset the remaining carbon footprint with the help of Vancouver-based Offsetters.
Sandra Oldfield hopes that other businesses in her community will follow Tinhorn’s lead in taking responsibility for their greenhouse gas emissions. “This type of program is really important to us. We live in this community and believe we need to be stewards of not only the land, but of the environment that we share with our neighbours and our guests.” Tinhorn Creek has also been recognized by The Land Conservancy as a partner for ongoing stewardship through their management practices that protect and preserve local flora and fauna.

Offsetters is Canada’s first and leading carbon management provider and has recently been selected by the Pacific Carbon Trust as the first supplier of carbon offsets to the BC Crown Corporation as well as the first ever Official Supplier of Carbon Offsets to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Says Kari Grist, VP of Marketing and Client Relations at Offsetters “We are particularly proud to work with industry leaders like Tinhorn Creek Vineyards that demonstrate such a strong commitment and we believe that this program has great legs.”
