    By Type

We’re always looking for new technologies and energy innovations to ensure we source the most effective projects. Every Offsetters’ project results in real, additional and permanent reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and would not be possible without our involvement and your support.

Our investment and involvement have enabled the following project types to date:

    Biogas
In certain conditions, organic waste can decompose to produce methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with over 20 times the global warming impact of carbon dioxide. Offsetters develops and invests in projects that capture this gas, from a variety of sources, and destroy it through combustion. This process can also be used as a renewable energy source. See projects.

    Biomass Fuel Switch
Waste biomass—such as construction waste or scraps from wood processing—can replace conventional fossil fuels as a fuel source. Because the carbon released during burning would have been released into the atmosphere through natural decomposition, waste biomass is actually a carbon neutral alternative. Offset funds help with installation, instruction, operation and maintenance of biomass boilers. See projects.

    Efficient Cook Stoves
Cooking stove technology in many parts of the developing world can be highly inefficient.  Typical fuel for these crucial household amenities include charcoal, animal waste, and wood, contributing not only to greenhouse gas emissions, but also to hazardous indoor air quality and rapid deforestation. More efficient cook stoves have proven to reduce fuel consumption by more than 50% and have the additional benefit of much improved indoor air quality. See projects.

    Energy Efficiency
Controlling and reducing our use of energy, both electrical and from other sources, is an important part of the structural change our energy infrastructure must go through if we are to meets the demands of GHG reductions needed to take action against climate change. Certain energy efficiency measures can receive funding from offset projects incentivising the adoption of cleaner and more efficient ways of doing business. See projects.

    Ground Source Heat Pumps
Some of our earliest projects involved the installation of ground source heat pumps in community centres and First Nations band buildings. Ground source heat pumps reduce energy used for heating and cooling by using the earth as a heat source in the winter and a heat sink in the summer. See projects.

    Landfill Gas Capture
Methane is a greenhouse gas many times stronger than carbon dioxide, released in landfills as organic ingredients break down. We’re working with landfill operators to capture this methane and destroy it through high temperature burning, or use it to generate heat and electricity as an alternative to burning fossil fuels. See projects.

    Small Hydro
The term small hydro is interchangeable with micro-hydro and describes the development of a hydroelectric project with a generating capacity of up to 50 megawatts (MW).  Due to their relatively small size, these projects tend to have a much-reduced environmental impact. See projects. See projects.

    Wind Turbines
Very simply, a wind turbine converts wind energy to mechanical energy.  When this energy is used to produce electricity, the device is typically called a wind generator. Wind turbines are not to be confused with a wind mill that is used to mechanically grind grains. See projects.
